About Martha’s Community Kitchen

Nourishing Bodies. Restoring Dignity.

Building Community.

Since 1984, Martha’s Community Kitchen has been a safe, welcoming space in St. Albans, Vermont, where individuals and families in need can receive a warm meal, experience companionship, and find hope through compassionate service.

Our Mission

To restore dignity to hungry individuals and families by providing nourishment and companionship in a safe, warm, and caring environment.

We believe that food is a basic human right—and that kindness and respect are just as important as the meals we serve. Our doors and our hearts are open to all.

Our History

In 1983, members of local churches came together with a vision: to create St. Albans’ first soup kitchen. On January 23, 1984, that vision became reality when the Kitchen served its first meal of beef stew, baked beans, macaroni salad, and cake.

While early turnout was low, the number of diners quickly grew. In its first year alone, over 6,000 meals were served. Today, we provide more than 55,000+ meals annually, supported by volunteers, churches, families, and local businesses.

The Kitchen not only offers nourishment—it fosters fellowship. What began as a humble effort to address hunger has evolved into a vibrant community hub, where people share meals, stories, and compassion.

The Meaning Behind Our Name

Our name is inspired by Martha of Bethany, a figure from the Gospel of Luke (10:38–42), who opened her home to provide hospitality and care for others. While Martha busied herself preparing the meal, her sister Mary offered her presence.

At Martha’s Kitchen, we honor both roles: the one who prepares and the one who is present. We serve with both hands and heart, offering not just food, but presence, dignity, and connection—a true ministry of presence.
